“Please, Tony.”
Tony looked up from the medicine bottle in his hand, giving the towering figure in the doorway a exhausted smile. “Hey, Cap, never seen you with facial hair. Finally going though puberty?” His tone shot for playful and fell horrifyingly flat, but he managed to shove the medicine under some papers, turning in his chair before Steve could see.
Steve’s eyes flickered from the patterns on his neck to the half-hidden bottle, briefly. He shifted, an intense myriad of emotions playing across his face. “It’s killing you, isn’t it?” he asked quietly. His tone wasn’t accusing or upset, it was defeated, and Tony grimaced. Cap was a good guy - a great guy - and of course Tony, of course Tony goddamn Stark would be the one to upset him on his holiday. It was supposed to be just them - no Avengers, no booming thunder gods, no gods of any kind - just he and Steve in a cabin with one television and one phone and all the time in the world. And here he was, the first night, and already Steve looked on the verge of tears or violence.
“Maybe…that would be best for everyone,” Tony said under his breath. He shuffled the papers on the desk and heard the heavy shift of Cap’s body weight, heard the angry intake of air that signaled the other man’s distress. “Maybe you should stop trying to save me.” Maybe with me gone you could find a girl that likes you. You wouldn’t have to worry about me and I would take the suit with me and no one could find it, and you could be happy. Without me. Without me and my problems.
Tony glanced over and caught Steve’s fingers brushing his beard - weird, wasn’t he blond? Not so blond anymore - in frustration. The larger man’s eyes were shut tight, agony carved into his expression. He took several deep, steadying breathes before he managed to speak.
“You’re not alone in this, Tony.” He hardly looked up, head bowed. “You can’t push me away, so stop trying.” And this - God, Tony thought - this is what he loved about Steve. His gentle eyes and his broad shoulders and his complete willingness to let the others crawl over him. Tony stared at the taller man, mouth opening and closing wordlessly. His eye throbbed angrily and he blinked hard, shoulders slumping slightly.
“You’re a good guy, Cap,” he said after a moment. He paused a few beats, then offered a scoffing grin. “And there’s really no pushing you away - your bicep is the size of my head.”
And despite the fading blue veins on his skin, despite the television only having seventy channels, despite the orange bottle peeking out from under new Iron Man suit designs, Steve gave a small huff of laughter. “You’re a strange man, Tony Stark,” he said fondly, moving into the room.
Tony grinned at him, preening at the laughter. “It’s all in the charm, Rodgers.”
